I picked this up expecting a typical thriller. I did not expect to feel so torn. Some scenes made me cheer. Other scenes made me put the book down and walk around my living room. Christian Thomas does not hold your hand. He just shows you what happens when good people do bad things. I am still thinking about it weeks later.
Look, this book is violent. Really violent. The branding scenes stuck with me for days. But here is the thing. The violence never felt cheap or pointless. Every horrible thing happened for a reason. I did not enjoy reading some parts. But I also could not skip them. Christian Thomas makes you earn every page.
This thing moves fast. Really fast. I read the last hundred pages in one sitting because I could not stop. The chapters are short. The sentences are punchy. Christian Thomas does not waste time on long descriptions of trees or whatever. He just keeps pushing you forward. Perfect for someone who hates slow books.
I expected to care only about Matthew. But Jennifer became my favorite. That woman survived hell and came out swinging. Her backstory broke my heart. Her actions later in the book made me nervous. She is complicated and messy and real. Christian Thomas writes female characters with actual depth. That matters to me as a reader.
The epilogue shocked me. I will not spoil it, but the meat grinder scene lives in my head rent- free. The ending did not wrap everything up in a neat bow. It left me uncomfortable. And honestly, that felt right for this book. A clean, happy ending would have been a lie. The Guardians earns its darkness.
